There were three students selected as scholarship recipients for 2020. Cade Cooper, grandson of classmate, Debbie Smith Kennedy, and Katee Perry, are both attending the University of Florida while Allyson LeFleur, neice of Greg LeFleur, is attending St. Petersburg College. The recipients each received $500.00, which is administered by the Pinellas Education Foundation. Congratulations to them all.
Last year's winner, Emma Wolfe, was eligible to renew her scholarship for 2020. Below is what she wrote about her freshman year at USF. Unfortunately, her freshman year has been interrupted by the Coronavirus. We wish her the best in her sophomore year with the challenges this unprecedented time has presented all of us.
"This first year of college has been quite challenging. Trying to adjust to a different living situation, making new friends, and having to find new ways to study. Luckily I pushed through and I was able to finish the first semester with great grades and a great experience. They all say freshman year is one of the hardest due to the whole adjustment to college, but I also saw fellow students and friends struggling financially when It came to paying for school. I was thankful to have been able not to worry about that but to put all my focus on my classes and my mental health. The scholarship I received went towards paying for my classes and the fees associated with them, and as a student who takes 13-15 credit hours a semester, it helped tremendously. If I were able to receive the scholarship again, I know I’d be able to keep my focus on school and minimize my worrying on other things such as finances."
